"Mel-chan no Niko Niko Smile Puzzle"

(Mel-chan's Smile Puzzle)

by Jacker Amano

メルちゃんのニコニコスマイルパズル_1.png

This is a puzzle game where you make "2525 (2->5->2->5) = niko-niko" (niko-niko is a Japanese mimetic word that describes the state of smiling) by putting the number panels in the stage together and doing four arithmetic operations with the two numbers.  You can specify what kind of calculation you want to do depending on the button you are pressing when you put them together.  This is a 16-stage game that makes you think about the order in which you put each panel together.

Judge Doc's Comment

It's a simple game with easy to understand rules, and it's very easy to play because it's all on one screen.  I found myself playing very seriously even though it was just a matter of matching the numbers 2,5,2,5.  Probably the one I would play the most if I had it on my phone, simply because it's fun (compliment).

"EX-RAISE EMOTION"

by kt.

A pseudo-3D high-speed shmup where you use normal shots and homing missiles to eliminate enemies.  While avoiding the barrage of bullets from a variety of enemies, maneuver the Lock-on Sight to aim and blast them with missiles.  This is a great game with high-speed battles that take place on the ocean.

EX.png

This 3D shmup is full of elements that will make you grin when you play it if you were once a virtual game guy.  I thought the graphics were beautiful and the system was well organized and high quality.  But unfortunately, the smile quality and original elements are honestly lacking.  I'm hoping for more originality in your next piece!

Judge S's Comment

Judge G's Comment

The pictures are just beautiful.  I felt that each displayed item was beautiful and it looked great.  I know it's not easy with the image resources, but since the girl's twin-tails are moving, I thought it would have been better if her clothes and legs were moving as well, to match the speed of the battle.

"Daikyoukin Smash Brothers HD"

(Greater Pectoralis Muscle Smash Brothers HD)

by Kanari

A fighting game where you control a group of muscle-bound, macho Hakase and others as they battle it out.  You earn points by staying in the spotlight as it moves around the stage.  Use a variety of moves and poses to steal the spotlight from your opponent. Look out for the poses at the end of the game.

大胸筋スマッシュブラザーズ_1.png

I couldn't help but say to myself, "What's with the pose!?", on the results screen.  Maybe it's because it's a little hard to control, but on the contrary, I find myself playing very seriously.  I remember when I was a kid, there was a popular joke manga style that "it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's funny in a perfect way".

Judge T's Comment

Judge Doc's Comment

It's a game that shows off their muscles in HD images with a risky title.  It's a strange game where you can't help but smile at the Kanari-ya World, where the SmileBASIC characters are so realistic that you can't even tell who they are anymore, and their well-trained muscles shine under the lights.

Judge H's Comment

I think it's a good idea to be able to choose between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

It would not be interesting at all if it was just the usual addition, but thanks to this idea, it turned out to be a good work that uses the brain.

"Smile Simulacra"

by jojo3

SmileSimulacra_1.png

Three birds flying toward the sea.  Aiming for the moment when the silhouettes of the three flapping birds look just like a "smiling face," you release the shutter.  Eight pictures are taken, and the score is based on the level of the smiles.  There are two different backgrounds: a sunset over the ocean and a night with a full moon.

The nature of the game is to capture the beauty of the moment, or rather the fun of the moment.  It's a nice idea that you noticed.  I was so focused on the silhouette of the flying birds that I overlooked it, but the background was actually messy.  That's what makes it so unrealistic and interesting.  The background is blurred to a good degree, and it looks like a masterpiece in some way.  It was a work that made me grin.

Judge T's Comment

Judge H's Comment

There have been several works about making smiles, but I like the idea of using the three birds as eyes and mouth.  It's a shame that after a few times, you will know the score pattern.

"SPEEDRUNGEON"

by Kantack

SPEEDRUNGEON_1.png

In this game, players compete to see how fast they can complete a stage filled with automatically generated gimmicks, while using a variety of actions such as shooting hooks into the other side of the river, flipping swords over walls to jump over holes, and quickly avoiding enemies.  There are also daily mission stages, endless mode, and competitive play.

It is interesting without exaggeration.  The game has a simple goal, different actions for different characters, various stage gimmicks, play modes such as daily missions and competitive play that can be played for a long time, pleasant sounds, and a good tempo throughout the game.  I played it over and over again with a smile on my face, screaming "Ahhhhh!".

Judge N's Comment

Judge Doc's Comment

The idea of using the right stick as an attack direction is quite interesting, and it's a good game that progresses at a good pace overall.  Maybe, that face is a smile.  Well, I think the expression on the results screen with the gums bared is a smiling face.  The icon's face is smiling, too.

"Neon Driftway"

by Scrubz

This is a racing game with a neon tube-like design.  Use drifting and items to drive through the course. You can also play against another player.

Mel-chan no Niko Niko Smile Puzzle (Mel-chan's Smile Puzzle)

by Kanari

A fighting game where you control a group of muscle-bound, macho Hakase and others as they battle it out.  Use a variety of moves and poses to steal the spotlight from your opponent.

Car racing with only neon tube lines is very fresh and beautiful.  The cars you can choose from have different performance, and it will be fun to compete with your friends.

NeonDriftway_1.png

There is no time limit, so even elementary school students can play while thinking carefully.  I think it's the most suitable for me.  It would be fun for both children and adults if there was a difficulty setting.

メルちゃんのニコニコスマイルパズル_2.png

It's got great smile quality, but the gameplay isn't as good as the bodybuilder character just posing!  Unfortunately, I didn't quite understand the purpose and the winning method.

"5 Moji Gattai -Smile Five-" (Five Letter Combination "Smile Five")

"EX-RAISE EMOTION"

by mim*mim

by kt.

This is a game in which you use the Joy-Con accelerometer to control the S, M, I, L, and E machines of the combined robot "Smile Five" to successfully combine them.  The score is based on how well you made the robot.

A high-speed pseudo-3D shmup with intense battles on the sea.  Use your normal shots and homing missiles to eliminate the enemies while avoiding the barrage!

It's a disappointment that there is only one part that can be controlled, and I wish the design of the parts could have been made more robot-like.  I can appreciate the SMILE letters becoming a combined robot.

The graphics are beautiful and the quality of the shmup is excellent, but it's a shame that you can't feel the pleasure of hitting the targets!  There is almost no smile quality.

"Fuku Kinasai" (Put Your Cloth On)

by K-Senbee

This is a game in which you have to dress naked people who come jumping from the left side of the screen with good timing.

It's silly and fun, but the graphics need a little more work!  I preferred to have them already in their underwear and put clothes on top of them.

Albiter Mai

(Part-time Worker Mai)

by Suzuki

As a fast-food clerk, she skillfully handles the orders of customers who come in one after another, and deals with "smile" orders with her smile.  Your score will increase if you keep dealing with them in a row, so it's important to decide which order to start with and where to deal with the higher-scoring "Smile" orders.

アルバイター舞_1.png

The game is highly polished.  It's a new kind of game where you get to be a fast-food clerk, and the characters are adorable!  It would have been even better if there was an "easy" level of difficulty.

Judges' Favorite Works

This time, the judges of SmileBoom consisted of members from various professions who have been involved in the "SmileBASIC" series, plus Hakase.

Here are some of the works that each of the judges has recommended.  We hope that you will be able to feel the differences in the perspectives of the different professions.

"SHOOT AND ATTACK"

by Thom

This project runs the programming language Lisp=SmiLE Lisp on SmileBASIC.  Write Lisp on the screen displaying a smiley face.

by Enuou

Shoot enemies and bullets, paralyze them, and then bump them off.   It's a vertical scrolling STG, and the feeling of a great chain of events when you blow away your enemies is exceptional.

Judge T (Sound Designer)

"DANGO_GO"

(Dumplings Go)

by K-Senbee

This is a puzzle game where you have to move the dumplings around the stage while sticking them together in order to reach the goal.  The key to success is to figure out what kind of shape you make by sticking them together.

The idea was to create a Lisp interpreter and write a program to draw a smiley face in Lisp.  I didn't know Lisp could be implemented so small!  It's amazing!

SmiLisp2021GP_1.png

As the creator of the data, I am very happy to see how much they create with almost the default materials.  The game is not just about shooting bullets and being done with it, but it's about hitting the enemy with the body and defeating them, and the exhilaration of that chain of events makes me smile!  I chose it because I hope that people who see it will think, "I can't draw, but there are materials available, so I'll just make a game anyway".

This is simple and very interesting. The shapes, combinations, and arrangements of the dumplings seem to have a tremendous range.  There was a huge range of arrangements, and I found that kind of "future" interesting as well.  Also, the simplicity of the game actually made it addictive, and I really enjoyed it as a new puzzle game where I had to stop and think about how to put the dumplings together first, and then move them around.

(Put Your Cloth On)

by K-Senbee

This is a game in which you have to dress naked people who come jumping from the left side of the screen with good timing.

I couldn't help but grin the moment I saw the "Smile" order. The tempo is good and it's fun to play repeatedly.

It's simple, but it makes you feel like a photographer waiting for the best shot. The tension to keep taking good pictures in a row is also nice. And above all, the whole atmosphere of the game makes you smile gently after playing.

アルバイター舞_2.png
SmileSimulacra_3.png

It's a strange place where people are jumping up and down naked, and you just have to put their clothes and pants on at the right time, but the fun is slowly building up.  I felt a gelatinous feeling that this idea would never come from me.  It's good!

Judge H's Comment

Let's put aside the fact that smile is not 0 yen, it's a simple yet well thought out game.  It's great that the theme is well integrated into the game, and the UI is very detailed and well thought out.  It is truly a model work, and I encourage everyone to study this work.

Judge Doc's Comment

In a fast food simulator at lunchtime, a part-timer named Mai and a group of hungry customers engage in a fierce battle!  The comfort of being able to fulfill orders that come in at the same time is addictive.  But then again, wouldn't it be obstruction of business if customers ordered only smiles and got angry when they didn't get smiles from Mai... It's a very fun game!
